3.5mm Audio Cable

First introduced in the 1960s, the 3.5mm audio cable serves as the connecting wire for 3.5mm interfaces, widely used in phones, MP3 players, speakers, and more. It's one of the most ubiquitous audio cables globally. While the 3.5mm interface boasts strong versatility, it's prone to external interference when transmitting audio signals, falling short of some high-end digital audio interfaces.

Nonetheless, the 3.5mm interface and cable remain market favorites due to their strong compatibility, high popularity, and low cost, ensuring their longevity for years to come.




RCA Audio Cable

RCA audio cable, also known as AV cable or Cinch cable, transmits analog audio signals. It typically consists of two plugs and a connecting wire, with one plug marked red (right channel) and the other white or black (left channel).

Audio output ports in electronic devices (e.g., CD players, Blu-ray players) use RCA plugs to output analog audio signals, connecting to audio input ports (e.g., amplifiers, speakers) for immersive audio-visual experiences.




XLR Audio Cable

XLR audio cable, often referred to as a balanced line, features male and female plugs. The XLR plug has three pins for positive phase, negative phase, and ground, ensuring stable signal transmission.

In audio signal transmission, balanced lines split signals into positive and negative phases, with the ground pin providing circuit grounding. XLR audio cables come in various types (XLR-to-XLR, XLR-to-6.35mm, XLR-to-RCA, XLR-to-3.5mm) to cater to different usage scenarios.



Optical Audio Cable

Optical audio cables commonly use Toslink interfaces (also Mini-Toslink, 3.5mm). They connect audio systems in home theaters, audio systems, TV set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players. Using optical fibers as the transmission medium, they offer long-distance transmission, strong anti-interference capabilities, and stable sound quality for high-quality audio transmission.

Regarding HDMI optical cables, they also use optical fibers but differ in performance from optical audio cables. With HDMI 2.1 support, HDMI optical cables provide higher bandwidth and faster transmission rates for audio and video, supporting Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and Dolby TrueHD video. Toslink-based optical audio cables, though supporting Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, cannot match HDMI 2.1's higher bitrate and channel count for audio.


Besides these, USB cables, TRS cables, and more are also common. Converters like 3.5mm-to-coaxial and RCA-to-ALR are frequently seen in audio-visual circles. Some users attempt to improve audio quality by converting interfaces with converters, but this approach is unlikely to succeed. Converters primarily facilitate connections between different interfaces rather than enhancing audio quality, potentially causing signal loss and interference.


To meet the increasing demand for audio-visual transmission, users should choose audio cables based on their needs, considering transmission distance, environment, and device compatibility. If your device has a multi-channel output, consider independent channel output. If it supports HDMI 2.0/HDMI 2.1, HDMI cables are also an option.
